Animal Testing Frequently Asked Questions

DNA Testing Process

How does the Breedwise DNA test work?

Breedwise DNA testing analyzes your animal’s DNA to uncover breed ancestry, genetic traits, and potential health risks. Once your animal’s sample is received at our laboratory, it’s processed using advanced genetic analysis developed by DDC, a trusted leader in DNA testing with over 15 years of experience. Once your results are ready, we’ll email you with instructions on how to access your results.

How do I collect and submit a sample?

Collection of your animal’s DNA is designed to be quick, easy, and non-invasive. DNA collection methods depend on which test you purchased, so please refer to the testing instructions included with your test.

Does Breedwise DNA test for all genetic conditions?

Breedwise DNA tests for a specific set of genetic traits and health-related markers. The exact conditions included depend on the test you purchase. DNA testing is not a substitute for veterinary care or diagnosis.

Can my results change over time?

Your animal's DNA does not change, so results remain valid for life. However, reports may be updated as new scientific insights or reference data become available.

Is the Breedwise DNA test safe for my animal?

Yes. Breedwise DNA testing is completely safe and non-invasive.

What do I do if I don’t know what test to order?

If you’re not sure which animal DNA test is right for you, call our experts at 1.800.625.0874 for a free consultation.

Sample Collection

Will food or treats affect the test results?

To ensure the best sample quality, we recommend waiting at least 30 minutes after your animal eats or drinks before collecting the DNA sample. This helps prevent contamination.

How do I get my DIY kit instructions?

Once you purchase a kit, detailed sample collection instructions will be emailed to you. If you do not receive the emailed instructions, you can download them here.

Do I need a veterinarian to collect the DNA sample?

No. The Breedwise DNA test is designed to be completed at home. The cheek swab process is simple, safe, and does not require a veterinarian visit. ** If you are collecting samples for breed registry, please check with your registry association as some organizations require a veterinarian to witness the collection.

Can I test more than one animal with a single kit?

No. Each Breedwise DNA kit is designed for one animal only. If you’d like to test multiple animals, you’ll need to purchase a separate kit for each.

Will my animal’s DNA data be kept private?

Absolutely. Breedwise DNA takes privacy seriously. We do not sell genetic data, and all information is handled securely and responsibly. For full details, please review our Privacy Policy.

What happens if my sample fails?

If a sample cannot be processed due to insufficient DNA or contamination, our team will reach out to you about next steps.

Additional Questions

How accurate is bird DNA testing?

Bird DNA testing is highly accurate (typically over 99%) when performed by a reputable laboratory using high-quality samples. Accuracy depends on both the sample integrity and the lab’s testing methods. These tests are widely trusted for determining a bird’s sex and, in some cases, identifying species.

How is DNA collected from bird feathers?

To collect DNA from feathers, use tweezers to firmly grasp and pluck a chest feather from the base. Important: Do not use molted or blood feathers, as they typically lack sufficient DNA for accurate testing.

What can equine/horse DNA testing be used for?

Equine DNA testing can confirm a horse’s parentage and verify identity. It’s commonly used by breeders, owners, and registries to ensure accurate records and responsible breeding practices.

How are DNA samples collected from horses?

DNA is typically collected using a simple and painless hair-pulling method. The sample must include the hair root (follicle), as this is where the DNA is extracted for testing.

What is polycystic kidney disease (PKD) in cats?

Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic condition that causes fluid-filled cysts to form in a cat’s kidneys, potentially leading to kidney failure. It’s most common in Persian and related breeds and can be identified early through DNA testing.

Why should I DNA test my cat for PKD?

DNA testing for PKD allows breeders and pet owners to detect the disease before symptoms appear. Early identification helps with breeding decisions and long-term health management, especially for at-risk breeds like Persians and Himalayans.

What can I learn from an alpaca DNA test?

The two alpaca DNA tests available are DNA profiling and BVDV testing. DNA profiling confirms the animal’s genetic identity and is often required for registration or breeding records. The BVDV (Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus) test detects a persistent infection that can impact herd health. Both tests are essential for responsible herd management and registry compliance.

Why does the Alpaca Owners Association (AOA) trust DDC for DNA testing?

The AOA selected DDC as its official DNA testing partner in 2010 after a rigorous review of multiple laboratories. DDC was chosen for its proven accuracy, integrity, and outstanding customer service. Since then, DDC has processed hundreds of thousands of alpaca DNA tests and continues to exceed expectations. According to the AOA, DDC has shown exceptional dedication to the alpaca community and remains a trusted partner in delivering high-quality testing services.
